According to a recent study from comScore, there has been a tremendous growth in Facebook and Twitter users accessing the platforms from their mobile phones. Facebook’s mobile use grew by 112% over the past year, while Twitter experienced a 347% growth.
After a little digging, I also found this post about a Nielsen Report with a few other interesting stats:
* Kids don’t lead mobile social networking usage – as only 7% of mobile networking activity comes from 13-to-17 year olds and only 16% comes from 18-to-24 year olds. The most dominant age group is 35-54 year olds.
* Women account for 55% of mobile networking activity
“Social networking remains one of the most popular and fastest-growing behaviors on both the PC-based Internet and the mobile Web,” said Mark Donovan, comScore senior vice president of mobile, in the company’s press release. “Social media is a natural sweet spot for mobile since mobile devices are at the center of how people communicate with their circle of friends, whether by phone, text, email, or, increasingly, accessing social networking sites via a mobile browser.”
According to the report, Facebook had roughly 25.1 million mobile users in January 2010, while competitors Myspace had 11.4 million and Twitter had 4.7 million. As the report clarifies, the true numbers are actually even higher, as “these figures do not include access of the social networking services by the nearly 6 million mobile phone owners who do so exclusively through mobile applications.”
Mobile social networking is certainly a topic that we’re working on here at Digital Park. It’s definitely an exciting field, particularly with the advent of geolocation services like Foursquare and Yelp.
I know I use a number of social media apps on my rbb Blackberry, my favorites being Delicious, Facebook, Twitter, and Foursquare. What about you? Do you use your mobile phones to access social media? If no, why not?
